This was the eerie scene that greeted researchers in Dallas, Texas, after thousands of spiders worked together to form a web to catch prey.\r
\r
The spider-blanket has been described as ‘football-field length, but perhaps more ominously as ‘draping the trees like shrouds – which sounds like something straight from a terrifying horror movie.\r
\r
People arent finding it too unsettling, though, and it has turned into an unlikely tourist attraction.\r
\r
‘Someone stepping off the road for a closer look will see thousands of lanky spiders darting among the webs that extend up to 40 feet into the trees, entomologist Mike Merchant explained.\r
\r
‘There is a surreal quality to the extensive webbing covering in these trees.\r
\r
Describing the initial discovery, he added: ‘The web was more than creepy.\r
\r
‘Finding spiders working together to build a huge web in what was more of a cooperative or “communal” scenario was a real surprise for many experts.\r
\r
It is believed that the huge web is formed during a ‘perfect storm of weather conditions when the air is dense with flying insects – making it easier for spiders to catch their prey.\r
\r
You shouldnt worry too much, though, as the nests are totally harmless to humans – despite appearing to be pretty damn creepy.\r
\r
‘Insecticides or other treatments are really unnecessary as this spider is essentially harmless and, although the communal nest may look spooky, they too are basically benign and are a sight more to be appreciated than feared, Merchant reassures us.\r
